The aged and the disabled people may be called for the maximum standard and level of care and protection that we can afford. To alleviate their difficulties we can also think one step ahead and start the preparation right from our home only. If we try to make our home and several of its facilities keeping our old days in mind or for some disabled member of our home, then it will go a great way to make their daily life much more comfortable. Here we will try to give you some tips which will be helpful to you in a later age or at the present time if you have any disabled member or relative.

Since the preparation is about making the home or transforming it into a cozy comfortable den for the aged or disabled people, let us begin it right from the doorstep. The general standard of our doorways are 32 inch wide. But this is not appropriate for wheelchair access. While we are preparing our home for the senior or the disabled people, we should keep this aspect in mind and make all the doors 34 inch wide that would be easily accessible by the wheelchairs then.  This will be in accordance with the Americans with Disability Act as well. You will also have to make all the handles of the doors in ‘L’ shaped to abide by this act.

After the doors, now you can take care of the floor of the house. Make the flooring with the nonskid tiles. This is better than the carpet as carpet will be troublesome in case of free movements of the wheelchair.

Now is the time to take care of the interiors of the home. You can and rather always should prepare an extra room keeping the need of senior and disabled people in mind. Make the racks of this room very low but durable and keep necessary things within easy reach.

While you are keeping an additional room ready for the purpose, think about how to modify the rooms we use everyday and generally. Kitchen is such a place that requires much modification in order to render it perfect for the aged people in your house. Make the racks and the shelves here also low enough that they can reach to the articles easily. Since this will require much plumbing work, you can also prepare a special corner where you can keep all the articles and items easy to reach and handy.

Like kitchen, bathroom is another important part of the house that calls for special attention. In order to make the disabled and the aged people use the toilets and the bathrooms easily, you need to have certain variations. This will include, installing purpose built grasp bars so that these people can easily use the commode, bathtub and other parts of the bathroom. Also try to keep at least one big bathroom to facilitate the disabled or the aged person at your home.

While these are some guidelines and tips for you to make your home a perfect one to tend the aged and the disabled, you can also try and acquire some more knowledge to prepare yourself in case any emergency arises. Prepare.org offers you some valuable tips that you can go through.
